Part I of II. Companion to the cruising article in Southwinds Magazine, December 2010 issue. (southwindsmagazine.com) Rebecca Burg in her 31′ Bayfield, and fellow cruiser, Neil in his 1975-model Cape Dory 25, travel behind the Florida Keys, in Florida Bay, past Cape Sable and to Cape Romano. A brief, simple glimpse of boating through this area in the late spring. (Burg’s Website with more sailing “stuff”: www.artoffshore.com) NOTE: With the outboard not working on Neil’s boat, he strictly sailed for the entire trip.

Sailboat cruising to Marco Island, Florida. Two singlehanders cruise from Cape Romano to Marco and discover the fun boaters can have touring this small island. The area’s negative reputation, due to a past ordinance against anchoring, lingers amongst traveling cruisers. Not to worry, a court case & state statutes caused Marco to drop its unreasonable anchoring ordinance. Neil & Rebecca find friendly shores that welcome the business that cruisers bring.

Question: How do you re-board a yacht if no-one lowers the boat ladder?
Suppose you take a boat into the middle of the ocean, go for a dip (or gets washed overboard by a wave, or stumbles, or gets thrown overboard) but forgot to lower the boat ladder. No-one is on available to help you on-board. The hull is too slick to climb up, and the deck is too high above the water. This has to happen and there has to be an easy way to get back on-board. In such a situation, how can a person re-board without the ladder?

Question: When does a sail boat become a yacht?
Modern sailing boats are described as dinghies, keel boats, cruisers, catamarans, etc. but when is it OK to describe a sailing boat as a yacht? Is it size? Or because it has a weighted keel? Or is it because it has a cabin?

There’s no rule on when a sailboat is a Yacht. The customs have changed over the years, so most anything over 32 ft. with a cabin can be considered a Yacht. I hope this helps.
