Question: How much does it cost to add solar panals and a wind generator to a 43 foot sailboat?
A turn key system and how hard are they to install?

Answer:

Answer by billrussell42
They both have problems. Is this to operate when in motion or just when tied up? first I’ll assume when in motion.

A solar panel only works in direct sun, so where would you located it where the sun would not be blanked by the sails?

Wind turbines are efficient only when natural wind turns them. If you use forward motion to turn the vanes, you wind up losing energy, as the work required to push the turbine forward is more than you can extract from their motion.

And also, where can you place it where it will not interfere with the sails?

But if you can work out these problems…

The cost depends on how large an installation you want, or can fit in.
Solar arrays for a house can cost upwards of $ 20000.

If this is for stationary use only, it has a much better chance of succeeding, at least the solar part of it. If you always tie up in the same orientation, the solar array can be planned around that.

Wind turbine for stationary use is more difficult, as you would have to disassemble it when in motion.

Turnkey means it gets installed for you.

Well the only Punta Eugenia, Mexico I can find using Google maps is a boulevard in Ensenada. Assuming that Punta Eugenia is in the vicinity that means you want to travel about 50 miles into Mexico. Assuming favorable winds, of suitable velocity and direction, and a hull speed on a 31 foot boat somewhere around 7 knots. If the wind blows strong enough to let you do 5 miles per hour it will get you there in about 10 hours. If the wind is light and you can only do 1mph it could take you 50 hours. That’s more than two days. Normally when the winds are that light though you would either drop the sails and use the engine or at least start the engine and motorsail the boat to your destination.

Question: How long does it take to sail from California to Floida in a 30 foot sailboat? Thanks in advance.?
I need to get my boat to Florida desperately. Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Answer by George P
It would probably take about a month, since you would have to go through the Panama Canal.
Its approx 5000 miles. Depending on how fast you go, actually it might actually take you a lot longer than a month.

It would be faster to have it shipped by truck

Question: How much does it cost to hire a small crew for a 60 foot motor yacht?
How many crew (live aboard) would be needed, and how is the basic salary calculated? Or, what factors are considered in calculating their salary?
lol…not quite to the hiring phase yet, but will keep you in mind.

Would be Fully automated.
No cook needed.
Just a skipper and maybe one other.
My mate and I would be working crew also.
Is that helpful?

Question: Is it feasible to have a pool table on a 45 meter (147 foot) motor yacht?
Is it feasible to have a pool table on a 45 meter (147 foot) motor yacht?

Would a boat that size be fairly still in the water or would there be too much sway to really be able to play?
I was just wondering. You just do not see too many yachts with pool tables.

Lets assume the boat is at anchor. I do not want to specify a location, because a yacht that size can go just about anywhere.

Answer:

Answer by Writing a paper for school!!
That depends like what water you are on or if someone is driving or if you are at a stand still…. it all has to come into consideration.

Question: What training is required to drive a 60 to 80 foot yacht?
I already have my boaters license in the state of Wisconsin, but that only goes up to 65 feet and is only valid in Wisconsin. Thanks!

Answer:

Answer by Richard C
Most States have a limit on how big of a boat you can operate without more training, but some do not. However, many larger yachts have paid crew, and they must hold a USCG license. It’s not difficult to obtain a Captains license, but one of the requirements is that you document experience (often under a licensed captain) piloting boats.

There are various schools that offer training for Captains Licenses. You should be able to find one in your area.

Question: What kind of licence and certification and training would I need to drive a 57 foot yacht, and a 160 ft yacht?
I am just wondering if there is any kind of certification and training that I would need to drive a 57 and 160 foot motor yacht, is it just like drivers education except for boats?

Thanks
oh….so I need experience? All i want is a party yacht…im not going to go across the ocean or anything..just around the bay that I live on. Do I still need this licence?
And it would be my personal yacht, not for a company
Oh I only meant this for recreation, not for a career. I mean I want to buy a yacht, not work on one :p

I just want it to be on my dock so I can take it out with my family when ever we want.

Answer by DANIEL S
You need a 100 ton license. You also need quite a bit of logged proveable sea time from a licensed captain.
It takes quite a bit of commitment on your part, do’nt think you’re just climbing onto some boat & start learning.
You’ll have to start from the bottom & work your way up, sometimes it can take several years.
There are also tests on merritime laws, map & chart reading, & general merritime practices among others.
It does’nt matter what you use it for, or how far you go, a vessel that big, you definately need a license.
Do’nt let this discourage you, it is an attainable goal & a fulfilling, respectable career, it just takes time.

Question: How do you put a big sailboat in and out of the water. Like maybe a sixty foot yacht. I saw some?
crane-like things at the yacht club but they didn’t look big enough to hoist a big boat. Any body know of a site where I can see pics of a big boat being hoisted or transported?
The crane-like things were just a post bolted into concrete with single arm extending from the top of the post with a cable and hook suspended from the arm, not at all like the machine Robert R so eloquently describes.

Answer:

Answer by Robert R
That “crane looking thing” at the yacht club is a lot more formidable than you think. It has 2 large slings on 4 points, that are positioned at lifting points under the boat’s hull. Then, though a series of electric and hydraulic winches, the slings and the boat are slowly lifted from the water. When the boat’s keel is a foot or two off the ground, the lift just drives the boat to it’s resting place, where it’s “blocked” to keep it vertical. About 50% of the boat’s weight will be resting on it’s keel. Once it’s stabilized, and the lift moves away, the boat is considered, “on the hard”, and is ready to be serviced.
