Question: How much weight does a 1977 27ft hunter sailboat need in anchorage to be moored at the mouth of a river w/ tid?
The river has tides. I do not know the exact model of the boat, or how much she weighs. I just need to know how many anchors, and how much weight to use so that it doesnt drag.

Weight isn’t necessarily as important as having the correct type of anchor for the type of river bottom you are trying to attach to, the correct road(?), and making sure how much its going to swing in the tide/current.

Question: What type of sailboat will I need to make a trip to so south america?
I’m thinking of doing a trip from san diego, Ca all the way down south america and back up again from the other side to TX with a friend. The problem is we don’t know anything about sailboats so we are trying to find the best kind to make such a long trip and comfortably live in for a while.

I was going to attempt a comical answer, but I’ll save that for another post. Sailing around a continent is not something to plan lightheartedly, even if you have experience. I’m not sure all that is required, but I would start with the U.S.Coast Guard. I’m sure they can tell you all that’s required (training, equipment, learning navigation, etc.).

Y’know what? get a land yacht (RV motorhome) and drive down to S. America and back up. Gotta be easier than two noobies with a Christopher Columbus complex trying to take to the sea.

Question: What kind of license do you need for a large yacht?
What kind of license do I need to get to operate a large yacht. (over 120 feet, roughly 160,000kg displacement) for only personal/recreational reasons. Im not sure what the gross tonnage is.
sorry, had to look it up. Gross tonnage is 155.
kenbgray: thats what I have heard before as well, however I have also heard that its not based of LOA, but on gross tonnage (something about a 200GT marr)

Anything over 65 feet, you need a captains license to operate it.

Question: I am buying a yacht (sailing), which size will I need?
I am thinking of buying a sailing yacht to sail from the uk to the med, via west coast France and northern Spain, down Portugal and through the straits, Hopefully travellig for 9 months to a year from place to place.

Is this safe in a small ie 20-25′ yacht or will I need bigger?

I am in the “research” stage of planning so any info would be great!

Answer:

Answer by jimmy
a 20′-25′ isn’t that great for the open seas especially if you encounter weather.

Since money is obviously no option, why don’t you go big time? I mean hey…no sense in trying to cut a dime here and there. So GO BIG. Travelling for almost a year on the sea–sure would be nice. Might as well make it big and as comfortable as possible.

Question: How big of a sailboat would I need to sail down the coast from New England to Florida or the Caribbean?
Any recomendations for a specific kind of boat? Something that I could operate with one other person.

Answer:

Answer by ozzz_hole
Most cruisers doing that trip like to take the intercoastal route most of the way down to FL, it’s almost totally protected.
Your destination in the caribbean from FL will determine if your friend is still your friend at the end. ;)
The path from FL to islands such as the VI, St. Maarten… are directly into the trade winds, so it’s a beat the whole way. Directly into the wind and waves; it can get old quick especially in a smaller boat. The easiest way to get to those islands is via Bermuda, but that is an ocean passage…
Is this friend someone you’re intimate with or do you have a problem sleeping with your friends feet in your face?
Anything 30′ + would be ok as long as you have the correct safety equipment and ensured all your gear is ready for any type of trip.
How long can you tread water?

Question: What kind of sailboat would i need to sail to different parts of the world?
I am going to be learning how to sail here pretty soon so i am a bit curious what i would need be able to go wherever i want.

Answer:

Answer by mrmet_06
For any long voyages, you would probably require some type of schooner or a large yacht (due to the large number of masts ideal for great distances). Keep in mind though, these are large and expensive vessels which are impossible to sail without an experienced crew of about four or more. Schooners are usually trusted because of their storied history as sturdy cargo ships (used in the triangle trade routes and transportation of slaves from Africa). In order to sail throughout the world, you must have certain certificates and licenses specific to your destination’s nautical requirements, so do your homework ahead of time.

It may be a while until you’re able to travel the world, but much luck to you on this endeavour, and I hope this answer could assist you in some way.

Question: What size yacht would i need to travel back and forth between the Carribean?

I have just bought a 38″ powerboat (cabin cruiser) in Biloxi, and wanting to try to get to the BVI or Bahamas. Also how long is this trip generally

Answer:

Answer by dallenmarket
Between the Caribbean and where? 40′ sail and power boats routinely cruise the northern Caribbean between the mainland U.S. and the Bahamas. To cruise the entire Caribbean including the open sea passage from the Bahamas to the southern islands would be safer and smoother in at least a 65′. (I know people who periodically run that way in 35-40′, but they are very experienced.) Open sea cruising requires a skilled and experienced pilot. It’s a long way to swim if something goes wrong.

Question: Do you need a special license for using a old sailboat? In Pa?
My mom is giving my husband her father old sailboat from the 70′s, it’s in good shape but needs some love. Do you have to have a “special” or spefic license for operating a sail boat- my mother thought so. She said my grandfather had to take a sailing test and spend so much time on the water before getting his license.
