Question: Can a Catalina 22 sailboat be taken out in open waters?
I live in Mississippi and just started sailing. I bought a Catalina 22 and the previous owner said I could easily take it on the ocean, where as now I currently sail in a 33k acre reservoir. I believe the barrier islands on the coast are 12 mi. out and was just curious as to what I should expect or if its even possible to take a sailboat this size on the ocean.

I believe that we have smaller boats than than out in the ocean. (barbados). Check here to see some of our fishing boats. Just be careful.

Question: Where can I find help on wiring holiday lights on my 17ft sailboat?
I currently use a 370 amp deep-cycle battery to run an electric trolling motor for docking. I’d like to run holiday lights up the stays of the mast. Can I use the same battery? How would I go about the wiring from scratch. Any suggestions are where to start?
Thanks and have a great Holiday Season.

use the battery to power a small invertor and plug in a set of standard out door lights

Question: How much does it cost to add solar panals and a wind generator to a 43 foot sailboat?
A turn key system and how hard are they to install?

Answer:

Answer by billrussell42
They both have problems. Is this to operate when in motion or just when tied up? first I’ll assume when in motion.

A solar panel only works in direct sun, so where would you located it where the sun would not be blanked by the sails?

Wind turbines are efficient only when natural wind turns them. If you use forward motion to turn the vanes, you wind up losing energy, as the work required to push the turbine forward is more than you can extract from their motion.

And also, where can you place it where it will not interfere with the sails?

But if you can work out these problems…

The cost depends on how large an installation you want, or can fit in.
Solar arrays for a house can cost upwards of $ 20000.

If this is for stationary use only, it has a much better chance of succeeding, at least the solar part of it. If you always tie up in the same orientation, the solar array can be planned around that.

Wind turbine for stationary use is more difficult, as you would have to disassemble it when in motion.

Turnkey means it gets installed for you.

Well the only Punta Eugenia, Mexico I can find using Google maps is a boulevard in Ensenada. Assuming that Punta Eugenia is in the vicinity that means you want to travel about 50 miles into Mexico. Assuming favorable winds, of suitable velocity and direction, and a hull speed on a 31 foot boat somewhere around 7 knots. If the wind blows strong enough to let you do 5 miles per hour it will get you there in about 10 hours. If the wind is light and you can only do 1mph it could take you 50 hours. That’s more than two days. Normally when the winds are that light though you would either drop the sails and use the engine or at least start the engine and motorsail the boat to your destination.

Question: When looking to purchase a sailboat what models are the safest and cheapest?
Something in between a 30′ and 42′.

Answer:

Answer by Ecky Thump
Hi Kevin,

Most sailboats will take more rough weather than the people who sail them. The best way to increase your safety is to take some lessons. Search in your area for marinas or yacht clubs that offer sailing lessons.

Here is a good website for information on sailboats. It’s written for Canada btu applies to the US as well for the most part. http://sailquest.com/market/models/models4.htm

To reduce your costs, buy a used boat. The market is good for used boats right now and you will be able to find some deals if you look carefully. Here’s a site for tips on buying used boats. http://sailquest.com/market/intro.htm
