Question: Best type and weight for 24 ft sailboat?
I have a 24ft sailboat that i use running around the lake. One of the biggest issues I have is with anchoring when i decide I want to just mess around. When i do this the anchor i have which is a flute anchor doesnt seem to hold. So what is the best type and weight for an anchor on this size sailboat.

Thanks
Thanks for the responses so far. The bottom is more mud than sand, but areas are sandy.

getting an anchor to hold is a product of several things. a good all purpose anchor is the fortress anchor. to get any anchor to set and hold you need a good length of chain and at least 5:1 scope for your anchor line.

http://www.fortressanchors.com/

i recommend the fortress FX7 with at least 12′ of 3/16 chain and 3/8″ line. the FX7 is designed for 16 to 27′ boats.

the advantage of the fortress anchor is that the flukes can be set at either 32 degrees or 45 degrees angle. the 45 degree angle is designed to give superior holding power in sand and mud.

they can be purchased at major marine stores

Question: what is the best type of sailboat to sail across the ocean solo?
i want to sail from america to europe, solo, and dont want to die.

Answer:

Answer by seattlesailor2000
there is no magic pill to take that will prepare you to safely sail across the atlantic, it take knowledge and experience in maintaining all systems aboard a sailboat, navigation, marine weather, as well as sailing experience. it is not a trip to be taken by the unprepared. even very experienced sailors have lost their lives at sea.

by the time that you have developed this knowledge and experience, you will know what type of sailboat you will need to cross the ocean.

there are many good sailboats designed for ocean cruising. two such boats are currently being use by young ladies to sail around the world one is an Sparkman & Stevens 34 the other is an Oceans 40. here are links to their blogs and web sites where you can learn more

Question: What type of sailboat will I need to make a trip to so south america?
I’m thinking of doing a trip from san diego, Ca all the way down south america and back up again from the other side to TX with a friend. The problem is we don’t know anything about sailboats so we are trying to find the best kind to make such a long trip and comfortably live in for a while.

I was going to attempt a comical answer, but I’ll save that for another post. Sailing around a continent is not something to plan lightheartedly, even if you have experience. I’m not sure all that is required, but I would start with the U.S.Coast Guard. I’m sure they can tell you all that’s required (training, equipment, learning navigation, etc.).

Y’know what? get a land yacht (RV motorhome) and drive down to S. America and back up. Gotta be easier than two noobies with a Christopher Columbus complex trying to take to the sea.

Question: What type of journal is used to track hours on a sailboat?
I know that, in order to get one’s captain license, a journal must be kept. Is there a certain type of book suggested or would just a leather journal (loose leaf) work? Is there something on the market specifically for this? Thanks. Lori

The Ships Log has a lot of information like who’s standing watch, etc…. but many pleasure craft sailors keep a separate “log” or combine the two…..there’s a lot of bound LOGS but a bound book or notebook works just as well……Good Luck!

Question: what is the best type of the sailboat if you sail towards the wind?
I just got myself into sailing and I’m reading about different types of sailboats. lets say that I wanna sail towards east but the wind is coming from the east. then I need to sail in a zig zag way, right? so which sailboats are perfect for this? ketch, cutter, sloop, yawl? is schooner also good for this?

For the most part, it does not matter. What does matter is the condition of your sails. The term you are looking for is called “Pointing” or “Pointing Ability”. You also have to remember that there is true wind and apparent wind. Some boats may point better than others, but unless you want to spend thousands on a pure racing boat that has excellent pointing ability, your better off just to buy a regular boat.

Question: What’s the best type of sailboat for a Blue Water crossing?
I have a dream to sail the Atlantic one day but I need a sailboat meant for long-term deep-water trips. What kind of sailboat should I get? The more I look, the more different types of boats I see. Any help from someone who knows would be great! Thanks!!

In today’s market, I’d look at Beneteau boats built in the last 10 years. They give you later technology than 80′s era Caribbean island boats, that are less expensive now, but retain the seaworthiness of that era. They tend to 40′ ft. where the Beneteau’s are more in the 37- 39 range. They are also more likely to be rigged for small crews than older boats. I hope this helps.

Question: Where can I find Austin Powers type decorating ideas for a yacht?

Boats are easy to decorate, but let me suggest that you go to a couple boat shows that will be coming up this Fall. By Austin Powers, I’d think 60′s modern…….but if you look very closely at a lot of boats, you’ll see all kinds of new ideas for not only decorating, but better use of the space. Then look at
yacht” magazine’s for clever ideas.

A couple common mistakes are using Glass mirrors, you need something that will not break if you are thrown into it by a rough wave and paneling / counters…that’s not made with water proof glue……..it swells and falls apart in the relatively moist environment.

Ikia has some nice stuff, and I’ve wired several of their LED lighting systems into the 12V system of my boat. I just glued the disc where I wanted them, hid the wires and ran them to the nearest 12 source.

Remote controls also give that “Austin Powers ” feel……everything from window blinds to a…. fireplace……
doors or hatches that open automatic……RV trailer dealerships have lots of gadgets……that can be fun.

I hope this helps.

Question: What type of vehicle do I need to pull a 24 foot sailboat?
What is the minimum horsepower, cylinders, etc. to pull a 24 foot sailboat?

Answer:

Answer by Tom S
Horsepower, cylinders, etc. have nothing to do with it.(well, sort of)

What you need to do, is determine the weight of the trailer, the boat, and everything that will be in it, such as food, supplies, fresh water, etc.

You then choose a vehicle rated to tow at least that weight. To be safe, go with something rated to tow at least 500 lbs over your requirement.

Question: Which sailboat type can make use of wind from any direction?
I want to commute to work by boat. I live on the very windy Otago Harbour in southern New Zealand, and it would all be perfect, if I knew a type of sailboat which can go straight into the wind, with the wind, and with wind from all other directions.
Is there such a boat?
I need one like that I think, because especially on the way home, the wind would often come blowing straight at me from ahead.
I’d be thrilled to hear your suggestions, as I haven’t found anything yet.
Cheers.

Answer by Mike
boats that are narrower with a deeper keel will point closer to the wind. Sheeting angle is important. You want inboard chainplates so you can get a tighter sheeting angle, this will allow you to point a few degrees closer.

Unfortunatly, there is no perfect solution here. esp with a sailboat. People in a hurry, usually buy motorboats. If the wind is 12 o’clock in the direction you’re trying to go, you’re going to have to tack back and forth. This is what we call, beating into the wind. Its the most exciting and fastest sailing, but seems to take forever.

Another option I’ve found is that I can usually point a little closer into the wind if I’m running the engine. Defeats the point of having a sailboat.
